OKO is one of the new breed of yogurt shops that is taking NYC by storm. Joining the ranks of yogurt shops like Pinkberry, Yogo Monster, Flurt, and Red Mango, OKO offers Greek-style frozen yogurt in a limited range of flavors (with original being akin to plain yogurt with a dash of sweetness and vanilla) with a multitude of fresh fruit and healthy dry toppings.
But OKO picks up where the others leave off in terms of their business model. "OKO", which translates to "Eco" in many European languages, is all about striving to be as earth-friendly a business as one can possibly be.
Counter tops made of sunflower hulls, floors of biodegradable linseed oil, walls of renewable bamboo - and they haven't even served you any food yet! Yogurt containers are made from recycled corn, spoons from potatoes, and the yogurt is locally made by a New York Greek family. But how does it taste? If you are a fan of the ultra-pure new style of frozen yogurt, you certainly will not be disappointed. Not a fan? OKO offers fair-trade coffees, organic teas, and locally made, fresh-baked organic desserts, like this tasty Banana-Walnut Bread. Prices are moderate, and the seating is comfy enough for you to enjoy your part in saving the planet.
