If there's just one recipe I add here, this is it. My mother's recipe for Krentje Brij. She generally doubles the quantities for a heaping potful of pink goodness! I wanted to ensure this cultural recipe was not lost, so I proudly added it to the English wikipedia. For more, see also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krentjebrij
- Boil - 1 cup pearl (or pot) barley in 12 cups water for 1 hour. (Add water if necessary while boiling.)
- Add raisins, currants, vinegar, honey, 2 packages of cherry jello (3 oz.)
- Boil 15 minutes more.
- After it cools and thickens - add more water for desired consistency. If hungry, serve hot! Otherwise, chill, and serve cold!
