4 medium apples, peeled and cored

1/4 cup butter, melted

1/2 cup brown sugar
Cake:

1/2 cup vegetable shortening

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 cups unbleached flour, sifted

3 teaspoons baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla

Recipe Method
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a 13 x 9 x 2-inch
pan with waxed paper. Grease paper. Cut apples in 1/4-inch-thick wedges. Pour melted
butter in prepared
pan and sprinkle with
brown sugar. Arrange apples from edge to edge in
pan.
2. Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; mix flour mixture with creamed mixture, alternating with milk. Add vanilla; blend well.
3. Pour batter over apples. Bake 40 to 50 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately turn cake upside down on a large platter. Serve with whipped cream.
