  • 1 cup butter softened
  • Additional sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Recipe Method

1. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add egg, beating until combined. Beat in vanilla extract.

2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Gradually add to butter mixture, beating until combined. Wrap dough in heavy-duty plastic wrap; chill for at least 2 hours.

3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease baking sheets. Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Place dough on prepared baking sheets. Flatten each cookie with a fork dipped in sugar.

4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until edges begin to brown. Let cool for 2 minutes on pans. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks. Decorate as desired.
